NOTE: Everything written below is 100% accurate except for these...these are the Unspeakable Horror Edition. These have seen their powder coat beaten and abused while making the journey to Wits' End. These sacrificed themselves. Scarred themselves, so that the rest in the batch could remain beautiful. What should become of them? I know, I too considered "puppy lake". But what if there was another path? What if someone...some caring could could look past the hideousness of a couple scrapes of powder coat and show it the love it deserves? Are you that person?
Note: This is for the seat bracket mount only. You will still need the fire extinguisher and the mounting bracket of your choice.
The Wits' End Fire Extinguisher Mount for the 5th Gen 4Runner/3rd Gen Tacoma/Lexus GX460/GX470 solves a problem of mounting a fire extinguisher inside the cab of the 4Runner/Tacoma/GX460 where it can be accessed by the driver within a few seconds. The only logical spot is the tried and tested spot of behind your calves. Unfortunately the only way to do this is to utilize the hard points offered by the bolts that hold the front seat rails down.
What this gives you is a sturdy mounting platform designed to hold nearly any 1.0 or 2.5lb fire extinguisher in place safely without effecting the use of the seat unless you are particularly height challenged. You may be limited in exactly how far you can move the seat forward, but have found no issues with anyone above 5'6".
It installs within minutes, just requiring the foot caps to be removed, taking the bolts out, slipping the plate over, and reinstalling/re-torquing back to factory values. This mount comes pre-drilled with most of the available fire extinguisher quick releases on the market including: Drake, H3R, Tek, etc. The design is ambidextrous so the same mount can work for both front seats on the 5th Generation 4Runner/Tacoma/Lexus GX460. The plastic foot caps WILL still work but you will need to Dremel out some clearances in the front to notch them if you choose to do so.
• So the seats can't be moved forward once this is installed?
For those that are "height challenged" this will prevent the seat from moving all the way forward. Generally those being 5'6" or taller likely won't find an issue.
• Can the seat move forward far enough to put the back seat down?
• I'm interested, but would like to understand exactly how much range of movement is lost on the seats?
Take the seat to about 1" forward of the front tip of the plastic feet cover, it can't really go beyond that.
• Do you find your self kicking or bumping this at all when you get in/out of your truck? I like the idea and location, just not so sure about the volume a 2.5 lb extinguisher takes up?
Never hit it once. You have to purposely snug your heels as far back as possible to contact the extinguisher. Even then you'll hit your knees on the steering wheel before you hit your feet on any metal.
