The OEM spare tire mechanism does NOT do a good job of locating the spare tire at the highest point and thus the spare is the lowest part of the 80, which could lead to possible interference when going off-road. Using this kit allows you to move the front of the tire up giving you a level position. You do not reuse any factory hardware, is completely bolt-on and no drilling required.
With a stock vehicle this mod levels the spare tire out and moves the front of the spare tire further from the ground. There is a support rod under the aluminum tread plate on the rear bumper that sets the height of the rear portion of the spare tire. If you do a body lift and your rear bumper supports raising this rod, you can raise the back of the spare tire and gain additional clearance. The slotted holes in the brackets accommodate body lift's from 0 to 1.5 inches.
The benefit of this design is it gives you maximum adjustability depending on the size and tread pattern of the spare tire you carry. It will fit up to 34.25 inch tire easily. TRUE 35 inch tires are too large because there is not enough room between the last two cross members in the Land Cruiser for a true 35 inch tire. Also, the style of receiver hitch, if you use one, can also encroach on this space. And finally the panhard bar needs the freedom to move up and down.
This design also supports the tire at all four quadrants so it is firmly in place. The kit includes a UHMW spacer block to ensure access to the tire winch once the tire is leveled out and new grade 8.8 hardware all the way around (16 bolts and associated washers/nuts). Kit is unfinished, bare metal, requiring basic painting.

This kit is awesome. Super easy to swap out and does what it says! Quality all around! My OEM tire wench looked different from the photos on the instructions, to be safe, I contacted them and got an immediate response back from Joey with an answer. Absolutely amazing custom service!!
PS - double check your fit before ordering especially if you have a hitch and/or Kaymar style bumper + running on anything bigger then stock with this combination.
Wow, had I only known before about this upgrade! I can't express the difference this made. It only took about 30 minutes to install. Super easy! The tire now sits above the rear diff and I'm running 285/75/16! Also plenty of room for the hitch receiver.
